Elder Recommendation

Recommending a man to the role of elder should not be taken lightly. Before you fill in and submit this recommendation form, please spend significant time in prayer for God's guidance and wisdom.

Please fill out all sections completely. We believe that this process will help us identify the men that God is raising up for leadership.

Understand that this is merely a recommendation form. The elders may not believe a person is ready for eldership, or they may be privy to information that may disqualify a man from serving in this capacity. Therefore, a recommendation for eldership is not a nomination for eldership.

Qualifications

Every elder must meet the qualifications provided in 1 Timnothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:6-9. These qualifications are summarized in 1 Timothy 3:2 and Titus 1:6 as blameless and above reproach. This is to be the overall character of the man. To help asses whether this recommendation meets the biblical qualifications, please answer the following questions:

Faithful in Marriage (1 Tim 3:2; Titus 1:6) - If married, does he have a marriage characterized by faithfulness? From what you have observed, how would you describe his marriage?

Temperate (1 Tim 3:2; Titus 1:8) - Would you consider him clear-minded, disciplined, and self-controlled? Have you seen any times when these characteristics were clearly on display? Please explain.

Well Respected (1 Tim 3:2, 7) - Do you believe this man is well respected among the membership of the church? Are you aware of any blemishes in his reputation among the communities (e.g. work, leisure) in which he is involved? If so, what are they?

Hospitable (1 Tim 3:2; Titus 1:8) - Would you say his family is characterized by hospitality? What examples could you provide to affirm that answer?

Able to Teach (1 Tim 3:2; Titus 1:9) - Does he have the ability to teach others the Bible in a way that is both orthodox and understandable? In what scenarios have you heard him teach the Bible?

Not a Drunkard (1 Tim 3:3; Titus 1:7) - Are you aware of whether or not he has or has had a problem with alcohol or substance abuse?

Not Violent (1 Tim 3:3; Titus 1:7) - Is he easily angered or quarrelsome? Have you observed any times when he showed restraint and self-control in the midst of a difficult situation? If so, please explain. Have you observed anything that makes you suspect child or spousal abuse, whether physical or emotional?

Not Arrogant (Titus 1:7) - Do you believe that the word "humble" describes this man's character? How have you seen humility on display in his life?

Not Covetous (1 Tim 3:3; Titus 1:7) - Is this man driven by greed and a love for money or material things? Are you aware of whether or not this man is in significant debt or struggles with managing his personal finances?

Effective Household Leader (1 Tim 3:4-5; Titus 1:6) - From what you have observed, how would you describe this man's leadership in his home? Would you characterize his children (still under his leadership) as rebellious? Would you characterize his leadership at home as loving?

Not a New Convert (1 Tim 3:6) - How long has he been a believer? What in his life do you think points to spiritual maturity?

Lover of Good (Titus 1:8) - Are there any areas in his life that you believe might be questionable in relationship to wickedness? Does he love the things that God loves? Why do you say that?

Upright (Titus 1:8) - Does he seem to have the right priorities in his life? Does he treat all in the body with respect and dignity? Please explain why you answered the way you did:

Holy (Titus 1:8) - What factors/attitudes/character traits in this man's life display holiness?
